How Does the SunPass Work?
Tolls will be collected using a fully automated system called SunPass. There will be no toll booths. The transponder, once attached to the inside of your front windshield, will be read by radio signals from toll gantries along the corridor. As you drive through the express lanes, the proper toll amount is deducted from your prepaid SunPass account. You can fund your SunPass account with cash, check, money order or credit card.
Available for purchase are transponders with suction cups or mini sticker transponders. The mini sticker transponder cannot be hand-held or moved from car to car. It must be permanently mounted to the inside of the windshield or it won't work because the windshield acts as an antenna. Once removed the mini sticker will no longer work and cannot be reattached to the windshield.
Go to www.sunpass.com to purchase a transponder. If you prefer to purchase one from a local retailer, go to Publix, CVS Pharmacy, or AAA Auto Club South. This provides an opportunity to purchase a SunPass without having to use a credit card.
Funds are available immediately as long as your SunPass account is active at the time you add funds to your prepaid account. Most current SunPass customers link their prepaid account to a credit card. When the account reaches a pre-set low balance threshold, typically $10, it is automatically funded with a pre-set amount determined by the user at the time of enrollment.
It is your responsibility to monitor the status of your prepaid account and ensure it has sufficient funds to cover all applicable tolls and other charges.
